Deciding Factors for the Best Scratching Post

Cats are lovely pets but one downside of having one is the exposure of your furniture to possible scratch marks. Because it is their nature to scratch to remove the outer sheath of their claws while the new ones are coming out. This is the reason why cat scratching posts are recommended for cat lovers. They will give your pet their own acceptable place where they can scratch those growing claws. These are actually wooden posts covered with rough materials like upholstery fabric, sisal rope or jute backing of a carpet.

There are innumerable designs and styles of cat scratching posts available but you have to put the following factors in serious consideration before getting the best one for your pet:

  • Sturdiness – it should be able to hold the weight and rigorous activities of your cat, add some weight on the base if necessary
  • Texture – know what your cat prefers to scratch, carpets are not really advisable as they have the tendency to get the claws trapped in them
  • Length – ideal would be 2 feet and up since cats love stretching fully
