close contact saddle

A saddle is a structure for a rider which is like a seat fixed to an animal’s back. We are familiar with horse saddles but they are also used in camels and other animals. Whether the horse is used for cattle work or equestrian and Olympic events, a good fitting saddle in important. Different designs provide different seat lengths and widths which can determine the proper fit of a saddle. The saddle’s flaps also influence a properly balanced saddle.

A close contact saddle provides the rider with the closest possible leg contact to their horse. It should be light in weight and have a thin latex-foam panel, rather than the thicker wool-flocked panel used on other types of all purpose saddles. The latex foam retains its shape and does not need regular maintenance. Normally a flat-seated saddletree is used providing the closest and most comfortable contact on the horses back. This type of saddle is difficult to alter, so it must be carefully fitted to a new horse.
