Honoring a Deceased Pet

Pets are like members of the family. When they pass on, you want to give them as much recognition as you would other members of the family. When my old dog died, I wrote a eulogy that attempted to summarize his life in a single sheet of paper. I sent it to my children who insisted on making their own contribution. We ended up with a script that was longer than planned, which we sent out to family and friends who knew him.

He was buried in the garden, a place that he loved so much and was his playground. If cremation was an option at the time, I would have had him cremated and kept in a memorial urn. I would have chosen an urn made of hardwood provided with an acrylic window for his picture. He was such a photogenic pet. I still have his picture on my computer wall and cell phone. That makes up for the memorial urn that he never had.
